Joe's accomplishments

The themes of Joe Berney’s life are innovation, social justice, good job creation, and overcoming adversity.  Some of Joe's accomplishments in his career in education, economic development, and business ownership are listed below:

  • Created a new finance product enabling the finance of solar on all parishes, schools, and rectories of a Catholic diocese for the first time, facilitating Pope’s Climate Encyclical
  • Originated and developed the largest PACE-financed energy efficiency project in the United States for several years (see below)

  • Identified, negotiated, structured and closed financing for country’s largest Net Zero Plus facility
  • Consulted IB Roof of Springfield, advising on Anchor Products start-up
  • Partnered with and mentored youth starting and operating Big City Gamin’
  • Built a coalition successfully targeting Oregon’s Enron energy overcharge settlement dollars to proven low-income ratepayer support and programs
  • Convened Energy Trust of Oregon and Umpqua Bank to create Umpqua’s Green Street Lending program, still operating to this day

Solar Installations

  • Was the founding Executive Director of the Lane Regional Workforce Quality committee, winning and operating $7M of displaced millworker training funds and the first Lane County school-to-work investments
  • Founded Lane County Mentoring Consortium
  • Founded Networking for Youth, bringing national attention and investment to Lane County
  • Created and directed the nation’s first Migrant Farm Worker Training Center after bloody strikes crippled Watsonville’s fruit and vegetable processing industry, worked with 7 processing plants and 2 Teamsters Locals
  • Past owner, Farmers Cold Storage and Freezers
  • Former Adjunct UO Professor of Education and tenured high school teacher
