Springfield Commissioner race to be decided in May Election

Springfield, OR – Lane County Commission Candidate Joe Berney stands as the lone challenger to Sid Leiken in a May election showdown. Berney’s campaign website lists endorsements from a solid coalition which includes the Democratic Party, Working Families Party, NARAL PRO-CHOICE Oregon, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Ironworkers, Advanced Energy Systems, Sierra Club, Mountain Rose Herbs, and a host of other businesses, labor organizations, environmental groups, and local officials. Current Commissioner Leiken is facing his toughest re-election effort to date, after losing the republican nomination for Secretary of State, and multiple scandals at Lane County government. Fundraising on both sides appears to be ramping up. Berney boasts a large campaign war chest and his Facebook page demonstrates he is inspiring a large group of young, energetic volunteers.

“This campaign will be won with people-power and old-fashioned shoe leather.” Said Joe Berney in a prepared statement. “It’s time for a change. Springfield needs a candidate that understands housing, education, local economic development and will fight for our fair share.”

March 6 marked the filing deadline for the Lane Commissioner race. It’s a non-partisan position, but the current makeup of the board is 4-1 Republican. Democrats outnumber Republicans county wide and hold a sizeable registration advantage in the Springfield district. The race will surely be close.

In a speech to the Democratic Party of Lane County, Berney declared. “Independents, Democrats and working families across the nation are winning races at all levels of government. Nationwide, we see a wholesale rejection of Trump’s agenda. Sid Leiken campaigned for Trump. He does not stand with us.”
